Stanford In The Vale

The Historical Attraction Of Stanford In The Vale

Historical attractions are ten a penny in Oxfordshire because the county is so proud of its heritage that it showcases its assets and maintains them lovingly. There are various towns and villages to visit and each one has a variety of plus points that can engage even the most reluctant of tourists! Each and every one has something that none of the other villages and towns do, and Stanford In The Vale is just one of them.

Stanford In The Vale is one of the bigger villages in Oxfordshire and sits in the Vale of White Horse. It is relatively close to Faringdon so it is easy to get to and well worth the trip. There are two churches to visit there, but it is the history of the village that makes it special. It was a major site of the English Civil War and housed both Royalists and Parliamentarians during the conflict, which was often localised in Faringdon during the early years. Cromwell supposedly kept his cavalry here for some years.

The village of Stanford In The Vale is picturesque and naturally beautiful. As it is located right on the River Ock, it has a refreshing natural beauty that can be found in a number of the local villages. However, this one is unusual in that it has not one but two village greens and this made it famous in years gone by. In fact, it made Stanford In The Vale a major market centre in medieval times. Locals would flock there to sell their wares and there are many local stories that are still told about this to this day. Speaking to any of the friendly locals will confirm this. It is most definitely worth a trip just to see the village and spend time in a lovely calm and sleepy village for a change!
