Abingdon: The Cultural Capital Of Oxfordshire
Oxfordshire is known for its culture and heritage up and down England and indeed to the rest of the world as well. There are many places that can contest the title of the most culturally representative of the county but few have a better claim on that than Abingdon. Abingdon actually has a supportive social scene as well as events that nurture the culture of the county so it is a place that visitors must visit if they thoroughly want to examine and experience Oxfordshire culture for themselves!
Although it is an extremely picturesque part of the world with some extremely picturesque and photogenic views, it is particularly notable for how traditional culture can mix well with modern culture without the one swallowing the other. They in fact work in perfect harmony. For example, there is a traditional farmers market and annual events that have Morris dancers on display as well as an MG Car Club and an air show! No matter what your interests are, you will always find something of interest here!
Abingdon has been in place since the Iron Age and still has some of the very old buildings in place that have characterised it as far back as written history will go. Abingdon Abbey is a prime example of this and it draws many visitors. There is also a museum to showcase the history of the area, but it is the events that are held in Abingdon that draw crowds. There is a Design and Craft Fair every October, an Annual Arts Festival every spring and the May air show. On top of that, there are car rallies held there too! You will notice, no matter why you visit, that there is a community spirit that is present in very few English towns and villages any more and this is actually what draws people back time and time again!
