Willen Lake: Technology And Nature Rolled Into One!
In a world where environmental concerns are a bigger issue than ever, many visitors to Buckinghamshire may be interested in greener ventures as well as more traditional tourist attractions. If that applies to you then you may want to check out Willen Lake whilst you are on your travels. Unlike other lakes in the area, Willen Lake has actually been purpose built with an aim in mind.
Willen Lake is located in an area of the same name in Milton Keynes. The village itself is not very big but it is prone to flooding. As the lake has some very beautiful and historically valuable features lining its banks, this posed a problem. For example, a flood could ruin the only building designed by Robert Hooke still standing. The 1680 church is very special for that reason. There is also a Buddhist Temple and a Peace Pagoda that were built by the Nipponzan- Myohoji in 1980. They were the first of their kind in the Western world and so are also valuable.
This is how and why Willen Lake is so special today. It was designed to be a balancing lake, and so would catch excess water that could lead to flash floods before they ruined the area and its gems. However, Willen Lake may serve a great purpose for those living in the area but it also provides a wonderful break for its visitors. For example, half of Willen Lake is used for leisure pursuits such as wind surfing, sailing and boat trips, but the other half is a haven for wildlife. You can see any number of bird species there, including wild fowl. The area itself is beautiful and the wildlife simply contributes to that. As such, it is a paradise for nature lovers and those in need of energetic pursuits alike!
