Buckingham: The Artist Formerly Known As County Town

Buckingham is obviously in Buckinghamshire and used to be the county town, which is relatively logical, or was logical. That honour was removed from Buckingham in the 16th Century and Aylesbury became the county time, thus apparently leaving Buckingham to its own devices, from which some experts say it has never recovered. However, Buckingham has done just fine with the title and is now a must see for visitors to Buckinghamshire.

Buckingham is actually a small market town that has plenty of history to take in as well as other activities like shopping and walking. It was declared a town by Alfred the Great in 888, but Buckingham was then passed backwards and forwards between the Saxons and the Danes for some time before it finally succumbed to a siege and was controlled by the Saxons for some years. The consequent fort to protect the town was built where the church is today so it is available for you to visit.

In terms of experiencing traditional life in Buckingham, there are many local shops that stock locally made produce so you can try the culinary delights of the area. There is also a farmer’s market on the first Tuesday of every month and a regular market twice a week on Tuesdays and Saturdays. This is one of the delights of visiting the town and often proves to be a popular attraction for tourists.

If you would rather spend your time doing something a little more energetic then Stowe Landscaped Gardens are close by. You can walk through the gardens at your leisure and enjoy the views. Just wandering around the town will give you a good idea of the history, tradition and culture from times gone by and today so take your pick. Buckingham will enchant you whatever you decide to do so just enjoy!
