ZSL Whipsnade Zoo: Take A Walk On The Wild Side
There are very few zoos in the UK today and the ones that do exist have millions of visitors flock to them every year from far and wide. They undoubtedly help to promote an interest in the natural world in both adults and children and can be very useful in contributing to the survival of endangered species from around the world. Bedfordshire most definitely does its bit in this respect by providing a home to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.
ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is near Dunstable and occupies over 600 acres in total. It has been open since 1931, but it recently underwent a facelift and reopened in 2007 to make it bigger and better for both the visitors and residents! There is a lot of money ploughed into it every year by the Zoological Society Of London (ZSL) so that it can keep up the good work. It is actually owned by the ZSL and this can only be good news for the future of the park.
In terms of activities, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is perfect for the entire family! You cannot miss it because of the chalk lion that is carved into the Dunstable Downs right y the park itself, but when you get there you will be surprised at just how much there is to do. You can take the Jumbo Express from one enclosure to the next, which is an in park train system, watch the animals roaming free in the Asian area where there are no pens or cages, take part in the daily talks about the animals, attend the animal shows and much more! There is never a dull moment at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo at all!
There are 6,500 plus animals at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo at the moment and looks to be more in the future. Many of them are actually endangered and the zoo has a number of exhibitions on all year round to try and promote awareness for their plight. The zoo is open every single day of the year with the exception of Christmas Day so there is no excuse for not visiting.
