The Mossman Collection:
An Upper Class Blast From The Past

We have all been to museums before when on holiday in foreign climes, and probably even a number of those in this country as well, but they all fall into the same sort of categories. You can see historical artefacts from the homes of people that lived hundreds of years ago, the latest and the greatest art, exhibitions about historical and scientific discoveries and even age old transportation such as cars, buses and trains, but how about looking at something different? If you do want to explore unique museums, collections and exhibitions then the Mossman Collection will definitely be our kind of thing!

The Mossman Collection is housed in Luton’s Stockwood Park, firmly in the heart of Bedfordshire. It is definitely an asset to the county because it is by far the largest collection of its kind in the UK today. The Mossman Collection is actually made up of horse drawn vehicles and carriages from the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries, but it also features exhibitions featuring the horse drawn transport of the world right from Roman times to a little under a hundred years ago.

The Mossman Collection has been perfectly preserved and is an integral part of our transport history because it tells the story of how the upper classes lived. It is named after the collector that put the vehicles together in the collection, George Mossman. Mossman collected fifty four vehicles before the Luton Museum Service added another nine to the collection in 1991 and set up this exhibition. A number of the models are original and kept in excellent condition, although there are some replicas, which were all made in the 20th Century.

The Mossman Collection has to be seen to be believed because it is an important part of world history and is also of great interest to transport enthusiasts. It really is fascinating to see how the world got by without cars and trains so why not take advantage and go view the collection whilst you are in the area? It is well worth it!
