Luton Museum and Art Gallery

Bedfordshire’s Art At The Luton Museum And Art Gallery

Every single county in England has at least one museum all of the with their own strengths and weaknesses, but the outer shell of the Luton Museum And Art Gallery marks this one out as different and indeed particularly special because you have two sightseeing trips rolled into one! In fact, this is the very reason why the Luton Museum And Art Gallery is one of the places that should be on your list of things to do whilst in Bedfordshire!

The Luton Museum And Art Gallery is actually to be found within Wardown Park. The building itself is a mansion that dates back to the Victorian era and it houses some of the most unusual items in the country at the moment. The items themselves are not out of the ordinary, but the fact that they are on display is. The exhibitions are mostly lace. It is the lace that is and has been made in the area for centuries. Some of it was actually produced in the 1600s.

However, the lace is not the only exhibition in the Luton Museum And Art Gallery. The area was also once famed for its hats and there are 600 in the Luton Museum And Art Gallery collection, but you would have to make an appointment if you wanted to view them. There is also a large collection of decorative arts, such as the exhibition of Saxon jewellery that is currently set up there. You can see this on a tour around the museum or a leisurely stroll if you prefer taking your time. There is a huge variety of other items as well but most of them are associated with the museum’s surroundings because it is obviously designed to highlight the illustrious history of Luton.

There is one sections of the Luton Museum And Art Gallery dedicated to the people of Luton and the city’s heritage, so if you do want to find out more about Bedfordshire and Luton in particular then this is the place to go. Even if you do not, the exhibitions are still fascinating and can really make for an enjoyable day out.
