Luton: Bedfordshire’s Premier City!

Many families that plan to visit Bedfordshire look at places to visit and things to do before they begin to travel and the city of Luton is often one of the first places that they choose. It has plenty to do within its boundaries and also has some exciting places to see. Whether you are into history, art, architecture, more exciting adrenaline filled pursuits or just relaxing whilst exploring a new city then Luton is for you!

The area that Luton occupies now has been used for settlement purposes for around 250,000y Years (that is not a typo!). Evidence of the Palaeolithic period has been found in the area to confirm that it is indeed a quarter of a million years old! There have also been Mesolithic and Neolithic artefacts found that enabled us to figure out how people then lived their lives. You can actually visit the site at which many of the artefacts were discovered. Waulud’s Bank may no have the stones that other henges do but the site is still there.

There are also many buildings of interest to visit in Luton as well, and many if them are steeped in history. For example, St Mary’s Church, which still stands today, was built in 1121 by Robert, 1st Earl of Gloucester. You can visit the church on any given day and even attend service if you like.

In terms of natural attractions, there are plenty of arks and gardens to choose from as well. For example, Wardown Park is situated on the River Lea and is home to a museum as well as a lake that attracts plenty of different species of bird. Stockwood Park is also a tourist attraction and home to the Mossman Collection and a crafts museum. The Chiltern Hills and Dunstable Downs are also nearby, so there is plenty to see and many a place that you can find the peace and tranquillity that is often absent from everyday life these days!
