The De Grey Mausoleum is just what it says it is – the mausoleum of the De Grey family. In fact, it is actually an architectural delight if you are interested in that kind of thing because it is actually a Grade 1 listed building and one of the biggest sepulchral chapels in England today. Located in Flitton, it is actually set in the grounds of the St John the Baptist Church, right next to the church in fact.
At the moment, the De Grey Mausoleum contains twenty plus monuments. It had to be expanded in 1705 to cope with the new monuments that were added at around that time because the original mausoleum that was built in 1604. The De Grey Mausoleum itself tells an epic story of one of the most prominent families in the region and is absolutely fascinating on the inside and the outside. It features monument after monument to commemorate the lives of those within her, from Henry Grey, the 6th Earl of Kent who did in 1604 right through to Mary Robinson, Baroness Grantham, who died in 1830. There is even a brass in there today from the church to commemorate the life of Harry Grey, the son of an earlier Earl of Kent. Harry died in 1545.
As such, the De Grey Mausoleum not only has a massive impact on the history of the area, but is also one of the most fascinating places to visit in Bedfordshire today. If you are looking for something different then this place is most definitely for you!
