The Brand New And Improved Cecil Higgins Art Gallery
Bedfordshire and the surrounding counties are well known for their culture and commitment to preserving the most amazing and priceless works of art from the past masters and also promoting artists of the future. As such, there are many galleries and museums around that actively work towards the future of British art. The Cecil Higgins Art Gallery is a key component of that network but today it stands at one of the biggest and best in the country.
Set in the centre of Bedford in two of the most historically valuable Victorian buildings in the city, the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery has recently expanded to use a space vacated by the Bedford Museum, which has been abandoned for almost thirty five years, to increase its pull on the artistic world. This leaves a lot more space open to showcase new and old art and really put Bedford on the map of the art world.
Before the refurbishment began, the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery held a massive variety of art and regularly hosted exhibitions. You could find watercolours, furniture, prints and ceramics under the same roof, including an amazing historically important furniture exhibition by William Burgess.
The Cecil Higgins Art Gallery is to reopen in 2009 after it has been completely revamped and there are plans in the works for events and exhibitions that would not have been possible before o account of the lack of space. There will be travelling exhibitions as well so the people of Bedford and visitors alike can have the art come to them instead of having to travel! It will be a Bedfordshire gem when it is finished but in the meantime anticipation is high. The Cecil Higgins Art Gallery will no doubt live up to expectations and give visitors another option when planning days out.
